Patriotic celebrations begin

World War II veterans, including Irv Wasserberg and Claude Pinkerton, sat in a row of VIP seats, outside Cypress Place Senior Living in Ventura Wednesday. They were treated as very important people during the home’s annual Salute To Our Veterans.

The ceremony included a presentation of the colors.

Capt. Tom Brovarone, the commanding officer of the Engineering Duty Officer School in Port Hueneme gave the keynote address.

Brovarone called veterans precious resources and shared photos of his late father and uncle in their uniforms. Brovarone said he remembers spending the Fourth of July in Baghdad and Iraq. He appeared glad to be spending it with veterans.

Photos of the veterans in younger days and medals they earned were also on display.
