Police beef up beachfront promenade patrol

Ventura police said two 23-year-old men walking near the Crown Plaza on the Ventura beachfront promenade were attacked and shot multiple times around 2a.m. Saturday.

The victims from Ventura and Simi Valley are being treated for wounds that are not considered life threatening.

The shooting comes less than three weeks after two teens were arrested on suspicion of beating a man and woman with a wooden object in the same area.

Some beachgoers said they would never go to the promenade during overnight hours, especially on weekends. They don’t think it’s safe.

Ventura police said they added two officers to the downtown foot patrol over the weekend. They will be patrolling the promenade.

Despite the recent crimes, the president of Aloha Steakhouse said he has noticed a drop in crime since last year.

Jim Avrea said he no longer sees people sleeping outside the restaurant or along the walkway when he arrives at work.

Ventura Police are still looking for the gunman and another young man seen running across Harbor Boulevard after the shots were fired.

Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Sutherland at 805-339-4467.
