The volunteers behind the firefight

Firefighters get most of the recognition whenever a fire breaks out, and it’s deserved. But most people don’t realize how many ordinary citizens volunteer their time during disasters.

On Thursday at the Montecito Fire Protection District, volunteers were being trained through a program called Merrag. From medical triage, traffic control, answering the phones, running messages, directing residents during an evacuation, there’s a wide range of things for volunteers to train for.

You’re able to train for free, once a month for 2 hours at the Montecito Fire District. Or you can simply call your local fire department for volunteer training opportunities.
