Santa Maria emergency responders train in disaster exercise
Emergency responders in Santa Maria participated in a mock plane crash drill on Wednesday morning. Crews responded to a mass casualty incident at the airport. The drill involved a 40 to 50-passenger plane which was on fire and leaking fuel.
Instead of using an actual plane, a school bus was used. Responders set up a triage to care for injured victims.
The Federal Aviation Administration requires a full-scale disaster drill to be done every three years, to test airport’s emergency plans.
Another drill will be held in October so the Santa Maria Fire Department can test out its new aircraft rescue fire engine.
