Tip leads to trio of car burglary suspects

A resident called Camarillo police last Friday after seeing suspicious activity along Mobile Avenue.

Police said they soon caught three people car hopping.

Senior Deputy Julie Novak of the Camarillo Police Department said car hopping is when criminals go from car to car checking for unlocked doors.

Around 5 a.m. Friday, officers arrested a 17-year-old, 18-year-old Patrick Sturm and 20-year-old Tyler Buchanon, all from Camarillo.

Investigators said the three admitted to opening at least 20 to 30 cars per night for the past two months.

The juvenile was cited for theft and released to a relative.

The two adults were booked into the county jail for burglary, possession of stolen property and conspiracy.

Deputies hope the arrests serve as a reminder to lock car doors and keep property out of sight.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity can help prevent similar crimes of opportunity by calling the police.
