Summer swimming still on despite sink hole at New Cuyama pool

A three-year old pool in New Cuyama has a sink hole and will be shut down all summer. Santa Barbara County, however, is paying for kids to have free bus rides to Santa Maria for aquatics and recreation starting later this month.

Sign ups will take place Wednesday at Richardson Park at 3 p.m.

Santa Barbara County Supervisor Salud Carbajal says the money saved while the Cuyama pool is down can be spent on bus rides.

He says it will help the children in the normally very hot Cuyama Valley to have “a fabulous summer.”

As for the cause of the sunken pool facility, Carbajal says it is still under investigation by the contractor, and the county. No cost estimate or timeline has been given for repairs.

The pool is at the Joseph Centeno Aquatics Complex and opened in 2010.

Further details on the program will be available at the Santa Barbara County Parks Department.
