CHP officer hit by semi

A California Highway Patrol officer trying to get a homeless man and his dog off the 101 freeway in Ventura was hit by a semitrailer.

It happened on the northbound 101 near Victoria Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

The officer was pinned by the wreckage and the pedestrian was pushed under the patrol vehicle.

CHP officer Dave Webb said the homeless man is being treated for major injuries.

Webb said the officer broke bones in his foot.

The dog, picked up by animal control, was not injured.

It took about two hours for the traffic jam caused by the accident to clear.
