Homeowners insurance does not cover earthquake damage

A homeowners or renters insurance policy does not cover damage from an earthquake.

State Farm insurance agent Paul Cashman says those without earthquake insurance were lucky this time around. Wednesday’s 4.8 magnitude earthquake only caused minor damage. He says most people would face financial ruin if their home was destroyed in a quake.

The cost to rebuild a home up and down the coast can be in the seven figures. Earthquake insurance is about the same price as homeowners or renters insurance. But, the deductible is 15 percent of the price to completely rebuild your home.
