Innocence march moves up the coast

Justin Brooks, Alissa Bjerkhoel, and Mike Semanchik are walking from San Diego to Sacramento in an effort to raise awareness about the California Innocence Project.

But their ultimate goal is to ask Gov. Jerry Brown to grant clemency for a dozen clients. They call them the California 12. They said the dozen were wrongfully convicted due to a justice system with problems.

Brooks said even a justice system that is 99 percent perfect will have some wrongful convictions.

The clients they represent include several people convicted of drowning, burning and shaking children to death. They believe the deaths were accidental and lacked proper forensic evidence and eyewitness accounts.

At least one of the convictions happened in Ventura County. It involves the death of a biker.

The attorneys are inviting people to march with them on their 660-mile journey.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, they will join a roundtable discussion at the Ventura College of Law. The public is welcome.

They will also make time to speak at a couple of Santa Barbara-area high schools.
