Looking Good Santa Barbara hosts awards ceremony

The Spirit of Service Awards were handed out in Santa Barbara Wednesday.

The Looking Good Santa Barbara committee gave out more than six trophies during a luncheon at the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center.

Enma Nunez, Lee Knodel and Ed France accepted the waste reduction award on behalf of the SBici Program. SBici is a collaboration of the Santa Barbara High School Dons Net Caf and The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition. If club members rehab three bikes, the fourth bike they work on is
theirs to keep.

Mary Micallef also won a waste reduction award. Micallef, also known as MK, is a parishioner at Trinity Episcopal Church and serves on the sustainability committee.
She started a composting program at her church. As a result of her work, the church is saving $1,000 a year on their trash service.

Sansum Clinic also won a waste reduction award. John Stampe, Erica Morris, Miguel Ortega, Chris McNamara, Nelia Abuyen, Jill Searchinger and Kathleen
Rodriguez helped Sansum implement a large-scale composting program at the Pasetas location. The Pesetas facility was recycling only 25 percent of its waste. Now 66 percent of the facilities waste is being diverted from the landfill through increased recycling and the new compost program.

The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara picked up a Clean Community award.
Executive Director Carolyn Brown, Calvin Mass, Tyler Forshey, Noah Burke, Augusto Cisneros, Roberto Nicacio, Lily Gallego and Miranda Andrade attended the ceremony. Their club has helped the eastside neighborhood clean up graffiti and litter. They also took part in East Beach clean-up efforts.

Cristine Collier won an individual clean community award. Collier is a Looking Good Santa Barbara Adopt-A-Block member. She has kept graffiti under control by coordinating clean-up effort and a Day or Caring event for the West
Downtown neighborhood.

Another community clean-up award went to the Los Prietos Boys Camp and Academy. The academy is part of the County of Santa Barbara’s Probation Department. Kristina Brumbaugh, Spencer Cross and Academy Youth accepted the award. The Boys Camp participated in the annual Looking Good SB Community Clean-Up Day.
