Rollover sends driver to hospital

A rollover accident on De La Vina St. in Santa Barbara sent a driver to the hospital and two vehicles to the wrecking yard.

It happened around 10 a.m. between Valerio and Arrellaga Streets.

Neighbors say the heard a big “bang.” That’s when the driver of a KIA sedan hit the back side of a parked van and skidded into a rollover.

The driver was able to get out on her own. An AMR medic team took her to Cottage Hospital with minor injuries.

One resident said the driver talked about being sleepy.

Santa Barbara Police blocked off the street for about an hour.

The owner of the parked van, Margarito Sotero had to empty his damaged vehicle which was full of his construction and repair equipment for his job. He was parked there while doing work in a nearby home. Sotero was shocked to hear the vehicles hit and see the back of his van mangled.

“The speed plus the velocity and momentum of the vehicle caused the white KIA to rollover,(after hitting the van)” said Santa Barbara Police officer Ethan Ragsdale.

Patrol officers say De La Vina St. is very busy and they often cite drivers for speeding or using their cell phones without a hands free device.
