Parks & Rec Commission looks at SB armory

The future of a military landmark in Santa Barbara goes up for public discussion Wednesday before the city’s parks and recreation commission.

Nancy Rapp, director of the parks and recreation department, estimates the armory at the corner of State Street and Los Positas has sat vacant for roughly four years, and is slowly becoming a blight.

But Rapp says transferring ownership of the property is complicated because it belongs to the government. “You can’t just write a check,” she said to NewsChannel 3.

Eventually, the future of the military site that butts up to MacKenzie Park, may be up to local voters.

Members of the parks and recreation commission will take a closer look at sale and development options during Wednesday’s scheduled meeting at 4:00.

The issue will then go before the Santa Barbara city council sometime in May.
