Man airlifted off sailboat at Gaviota State Beach

Santa Barbara County Fire Department, state parks personnel and the Coast Guard rescued a 75-year-old boater at Gaviota State Beach.

He was airlifted at 11:12 a.m. off the boat to an ambulance waiting in the beach parking lot. The ambulance then took him to the hospital.

The call came out at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when the man experienced a medical emergency while anchored 100 yards off the coastline.

His 40-foot sailboat was located 500 yards east of the Gaviota Pier. County Fire spokesperson David Sadecki said the man was traveling from San Francisco to San Diego.
