Limbs snap, avocados fly in latest wind storm
Fierce winds have sent avocados flying in Carpinteria, and trees snapping over a wide area.
Gusts have been clocked in many areas around 40 miles per hour throughout the day.
In Carpinteria, farmers are hoping they ease up quickly. Many have seen avocados blown from the trees. Last week several growers said they were seeing a healthy crop this year, but some of the fruit will be lost to this wind storm.
Carpinteria hosts the California Avocado Festival every October.
At the Douglas Family Preserve in Santa Barbara, a famous tree overlooking Hendry’s Beach could no longer handle the powerful gusts and toppled over. Many who walk in this area regularly say they have taken countless pictures at the spot as the sun set.
“I was gonna come take pictures, right now,” said Marlo Cochrane who comes to the overlook daily. “It’s one of the most iconic spots. It’s really too bad the tree fell down. I’ve probably taken a million pictures in front of that tree.”
A jogger along Highway 192 said she was handling the wind pretty well. “It’s not bad. Just preparing for any gusts that would throw me into traffic, but it’s ok,” said Sarah Huskins.
Santa Barbara City workers were still picking up palm fronds all afternoon that littered the scenic beachfront when the winds came through.
