Cancer free woman walks Mission Trail

In honor of being cancer-free, a woman is on a mission to walk the historic Spanish Mission Trail.

Edie Littlefield Sundby made it to the San Buenaventura Mission today. Six years ago this month, the 61-year-old was diagnosed with terminal gall bladder cancer and given three months to live.

After years of chemotherapy and a recent surgery to remove cancer that had spread to her lung, she had a dream to light candles of gratitude at all 21 missions. The mother of twin daughters hopes her 800-mile, 60-day walk from San Diego to Northern California will inspire others battling cancer.

Sundby described El Camino Real as sometimes ugly, stark, and harsh, but mostly beautiful.

She calls her journey a spiritual pilgrimage. She plans to arrive at the Santa Barbara Mission this Saturday.
