Waterfront gets new safety lights for pedestrians

The crowded Santa Barbara waterfront now has new safety lights at two pedestrian crossings.

They are similar to the lights installed recently at crosswalks on Milpas Street.

The lights were designed with an architectural look that goes with the waterfront area. They are located on Cabrillo where it crosses both Chapala and Bath Streets.

Supervising Transportation Engineer Derrick Bailey said the flashing lights will help traffic during the day when drivers are coming through in two lanes on each side of the street, and may not see pedestrians. He said at night, the flashing lights can be seen for quite distance.
