Royals H2O advance to quarterfinals

Tied at five in the third period, San Marcos scored three straight goals and never looked back as they beat Edison 11-8 in a first-round CIF Division 1 playoff girls water polo game.

Megan Bergthold took a pass from Hannah Koper and Bergthold scored from point-blank range and the Royals never trailed again. Koper then scored from distance with under two minutes left in the period to give the Royals a 7-5 lead. Bergthold made it 8-5 as she scored on a 6-on-5 advantage.

Halie Johnson led the Royals with four goals while goalie Jenna Phreaner stopped 11 shots as San Marcos beat Edison for the first time in three tries this year.

The Royals play at second-seeded Foothill on Saturday.
