Deadly hit-and-run case moves forward
A judge decided there is enough evidence against an elderly driver accused in a deadly hit-and-run in Santa Barbara last month.
Lau Van Huynh, 78, listened during Monday’s preliminary hearing as two CHP investigators gave graphic testimony about the crime scene.
Investigators believe Huynh was driving home from the Chumash Casino when he hit and killed Simon Chavez, 22, on Highway 101 near the Carrillo exit.
Detectives used surveillance footage from the casino to track down the car, which lead them to Huynh.
It’s still unclear why Chavez was walking on the freeway or if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
Huynh is expected back in court later this month.
