Wild weather forces road closures

The California Highway Patrol has shut down the Grapevine section of Interstate 5, where icy conditions, freezing rain and dropping temperatures have already caused several fender-benders on the steep roads.

The CHP also said State Route 33 in the Ojai Valley is closed from Wheeler Gorge to Lockwood Valley Road due to ice and snow.

Officer J.C. Lesnet says snowfall may reach as low as 2,000 feet in the area Friday, creating treacherous driving conditions on the main highway between Southern and Central California.

Stormy weather moving through the region has brought heavy snow to the mountains and damaging lightning strikes.

Roads will reopen as weather permits.
