Firefighter stair competition

A team of firefighters from the city of Ventura is training for a race up 69 flights of stairs.

That amounts to 1,311 steps or 788 vertical feet.

Ventura city firefighters and paramedics plan to compete in the Scott Firefighter Stair Climb in Seattle next month.

Today, they trained at the only high-rise in the city of Ventura.

They raced up the emergency staircase at the Crown Plaza near the Ventura pier.

The competition is also a fundraiser to help fight blood cancer.

Some of the funds, firefighters raise, will help 9-year-old Aubrey Gaines.

Gaines is the granddaughter of a California firefighter.

She is being treated for leukemia.

Firefighter Jeremy Henderson said teams, from all over the world, will be competing on March 10.
