Piru Plane Crash
Two men were killed Thursday when a small plane crashed near the mountain town of Piru in Ventura County. Ventura County Fire Spokesman Steve Swindle says drivers on the 126 freeway reported the crash around 1:30 this afternoon.Witnesses say they saw the plane crash into an orange grove just east of Piru.It happened about 15 yards from some ranch houses.There was no sign of a fire in the engine.The Ventura County Medical Examiner has not released the names of the victims.Santa Paula Airport is nearby, but pilots we spoke to did not know if the plane took off from their airport.The fixed wind plane is a Sting Sport made by the TL Ultralight company.As for weather conditions, it was warm, clear and windy at the time of the crash.The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause.
