Local Hero: Captain Curtis

The US Coast Guard recognized a Ventura Fisherman for saving a man and his dog. It’s another example of “What’s Right” in our community. The Captain of the Sneaky Pete thought he was getting bad news when he got mail from the Coast Guard. But it turned out to be a Certificate of Appreciation.Last month Captain Curtis Hebert heard a call for help over the radio where he was preparing to fish near Santa Rosa Island. The call came from a man who lived on a boat name Revenge and his boat was sinking.”Captain Curtis” was close enough to rescue the man and his dog. Then he went the extra mile and towed the 36 foot boat to a harbor where it could be salvaged by Vessel Assist. He said he didn’t want gasoline to spill in the pristine area known for fish and sea lions.Although he doesn’t consider himself a local hero his neighbors on the dock say he deserves the recognition. You can see Tracy Lehr’s story on KEY News.
