Locals React to Prank Out of England That Ended in Tragedy
A nurse who fell victim to a prank telephone call seeking information about the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy has died in a suspected suicide.
Forty-six-year-old Jacintha Saldanha, a wife and mother of two children, was found dead Friday morning, just a few blocks from the hospital where she worked. It was Saldanha who answered the phone on Tuesday, when two Australian DJs impersonating the Queen and Prince Charles, asked to speak with Kate. Saldhana put them straight through to Kate’s private nurse, who unwittingly divulged details about her medical condition. The radio station issued an apology and deep shock. The radio Djs were taken off the air until further notice. The Royal Palace also released a statement, saying William and Kate are deeply saddened by the tragedy. Dr. Suzanne Rapley, a licensed psychologist in Santa Barbara says Jacintha’s death, while a suspected suicide– has many layers to it, and pranks like this one– are like playing a risky game of roulette.
