Local Heroes Honored by Santa Barbara Independent

20 “Local Hero” awards have been handed out by the Santa Barbara Independent. The annual recognition began in 1986.

Among them, Carla Frisk, an environmental activist who has helped to preserve coastal lands, and close down the Casmalia waste site. She said, being chosen as a “hero” puts her in with a prestigious group. “We all congratulate each other as colleagues and that’s really great too. But when the Independent picks you as a local hero you feel it’s like the community picking you as a local hero and that’s just big,”said Frisk.

Other winners included four boys, Lance and Scott Brown and Sam and Zach Winner, who raised funds to fight child abuse, the manager of the Carpinteria Albertsons Ahmed Jahadmy who led the charge to convert his supermarket into a bagless store, and Nancy Kapp with the Safe Parking program.

Each winner was featured in the Independent earlier this month.
