Local “Dia de los Muertos” Event

A “Dia de los Muertos” festivity took place at Casa de la Raza in Santa Barbara Thursday night. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for loved ones who have died.

It’s primarily celebrated in Mexico, where it is a national holiday. But several Latin American countries also join in on the fun. It begins on November 1 in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints’ Day, and the following day on All Souls’ Day.

The daughter of Matt Sanchez set up an “Ofrenda” for her father, Sanchez passed away back in August, he devoted his free time to kids who were involved in gangs. A community altar was set up for individuals and families to honor the dead. If you missed Thursday’s event, the altars will stay up for a week.
