Bike Lights Give Away Week

The second annual “light give” away is taking place this week to help those on two-wheels become more visible. The Spanish Language Outreach Committee of the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition is handing out free lights to bicyclists in an effort to boost safety and decrease the number of collisions.

The event normally kicks off the Monday after daylight savings takes place. Each night, the group of volunteers is stationed in different locations, and gives away between 100-200 lights. Santa Barbara Police say the number of bike collisions are up. They add that the absence of lights was the contributing factor to the last two fatal accidents.

Thursday night’s event was held in Downtown, Santa Barbara. Fridays “free light” event is in Goleta: On Hollister Avenue, outside the Santa Cruz Market at 5pm.
