Tips for a Healthy, Safe Visit to the California Mid-State Fair
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. – Officials from the fair and the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department say they have tips for a safe and healthy visit to the Mid-State Fair.
SLO public health officials say they want to remind fair-goers to take common-sense precautions.
HEALTHY TIPS
Health officials say the best practice is one of the simplest: washing your hands with soap and water. Fair officials say hand-washing stations will be available throughout the fair.
If soap and water aren't available, alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a good option, according to fair officials.
The health department also says after visiting and/or touching animals to wash your hands.
"Always wash your hands after petting animals or touching anything in the areas where animals stay. When you leave animal areas, wash your hands even if you did not touch the animals," said Public Health official Todd Cuddy. "If you are looking after animals and want to have a snack or a drink, leave the area and wash your hands before eating or drinking."
The department of health says Covid-19 is still circulating in SLO County and say the best protection against fair-goers is a vaccine or wearing a mask, for those who are serious about avoiding infection.
SAFETY TIPS
According to fair and health officials, dress for the occasion or condition.
"On hot days, wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection," said Mid-State official Tom Keffury. "Wear closed-toed shoes to protect your feet. And don't forget to use sunscreen to protect your skin."
Another tip officials say is to stay hydrated, especially on hot days. They ask fair-goers to drink more water than they usually do. However, only two sealed plastic bottles of water are allowed into the fair. There is also the option to purchase water from vendors.
Fair officials say two no-cost hydration stations will be on the grounds, one by the livestock area and one in the main quad area.
Officials from the fair also say, avoid visiting during the hottest times of day and take advantage of visiting the fair during evening hours.
The last safety tip officials advise is for families to have a plan in case they are separated during their visit.
