Safe Haven in Goleta: LEAP Helps Children Cope With Immigration Fears

GOLETA, Calif. (KEYT) - Families in Goleta are turning to local support centers for comfort and stability as immigration concerns continue to ripple through the community.

The LEAP children’s center focuses on creating a safe and welcoming space, especially for the youngest residents.

One recent moment highlighted the center’s role. After a mother spotted immigration agents outside her home in Santa Barbara, she rushed her preschooler to LEAP. The child clung tightly to her, visibly shaken.

Caregivers stepped in immediately, offering reassurance and helping the three-year-old calm down.

In the days that followed, he began to process the experience by drawing a picture filled with bright colors and smiling faces — a sign he was beginning to recover.

Staff note these moments are becoming more common as families navigate the stress of immigration enforcement and financial pressures.

In response, LEAP has expanded services, offering emotional support, early education, and practical resources for parents in crisis. Leaders are also building partnerships with local schools and mental health providers to reach families sooner and provide consistent support.
