Honoring Erin Graffy: Santa Barbara Pays Tribute to a Local Legend
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A memorial was held Friday for Erin Graffy, a celebrated Santa Barbara author and historian known for her wit, intelligence, and deep love of the city’s traditions.
Graffy, often referred to as the "Society Lady," was a fixture at local events, particularly Fiesta, which she cherished. Her published works, including How to Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara: The Truth, Tales, Tidbits, and Trivia of Santa Barbara’s Patron Saint, captured the city’s rich history and culture.
Filmmaker Dirk Brandts described her as "a sparkling personality, impeccably dressed… a storyteller named Erin Graffy." Former El Presidente Scott Burns credited her with preserving California’s early Rancho period songs and dances, ensuring their legacy for future generations.
Mayor Randy Rowse reflected on her impact: "Her passion was genuine. Her voice and her logic were compelling. There wasn't much getting away from Erin Graffy because Erin Graffy knew, loved, and represented this town."
Graffy passed away last month after a private battle with cancer, which she shared only with close family and friends.
