Santa Barbara New Year’s Day murder suspect on the loose caught

The third suspect in a murder that rocked a quiet neighborhood on New Year’s Day in Santa Barbara has been captured.

Goleta resident Joel Angel Campos, 25, was arrested without incident by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies in Solvang on Friday, Jan. 19, 2017.

Both, 30-year-old Brian Charles Ruiz and Joel Campos have been charged with the murder of 24-year-old Jesus Armando Reyes, announced the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office on Monday.

Both men are accused of using a firearm in the murder while they were active participants in a criminal street gang.

Ruiz and Joel Campos have also been charged with the attempted murder of Thomas Arzate that occurred the same night. The DA’s Office says it’s alleged that both suspects used a gun in the crime causing great bodily injury.

The homicide occurred in the 200 block of W. Victoria Street. Arzate was taken to the hospital but Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adrian Ramon Campos, Joel Campos’ brother, was charged as an accessory to murder.

Joel Campos is scheduled to be arraigned in Santa Barbara Superior Court on Jan. 23, 2018.

Ruiz and Adrian Camps’ arraignments are scheduled for Jan. 31, 2018 at Santa Barbara Superior Court.
