Local community weighs in on the impact of Juneteenth

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— From the Harlem Nights Renaissance in Santa Ynez to the “Nourishing the People” Block Party in Santa Barbara, the people of Santa Barbara County have come together to celebrate freedom.

It all culminates in Monday’s federal holiday known as Juneteenth. Monday serves as a reminder of the trials and tribulations of black people in the United States. It commemorates June 19th, 1865, the day word reached Galveston, Texas that slaves were finally free.

Monday’s day of remembrance will echo throughout the rest of the week, as Pacifica Graduate Institute will be holding panel discussions about Juneteenth’s historical and cultural context.

We will be speaking to artists, social justice advocates, and small business owners about the impact of this holiday.
