Scammers target homeowners via email accounts
Scammers have recently used email tactics to target homeowners in the process of buying a home or refinancing.
Some scammers have hacked into realtors’ email accounts and monitored their communication with clients, according to the Moorpark Police Department.
The scammers have typically adopted a writing style that is similar to that of the realtor or escrow officer and have also used the same logos and signatures of the realtor or officer. The scammers have also sent emails to the clients and homeowners with details about how to wire a payment over to a specific account that belongs to the scammer.
The Moorpark Police Department warns homeowners and potential home buyers to take precautionary steps. Before wiring money, a buyer or homeowner should make sure to talk to their realtor or escrow officer in person or over the phone to ensure the legitimacy of the account.
A homeowner should not email their financial information unless it is completely safe to do so. Homeowners should also ensure that the site they send their personal information to is secured.
The police department also warns people to beware of downloading email attachments because they could contain malware, and to make sure that their browser and security software is updated.
The Moorpark Police Department encourages you to contact your local police department or other law enforcement agency If you have been a victim of a scam.
