Emergency crews investigating drowning near Santa Barbara Harbor

A man drowned in the waters off the Santa Barbara Harbor Thursday evening after getting caught in a rip tide.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of an ocean rescue at 5:14 p.m.

The man was pulled out of the water near the sandspit area of the Santa Barbara waterfront, and was reportedly not breathing.

Emergency crews performed CPR but were unable to revive him, according to personnel on scene. A chaplain was called to the scene.

Santa Barbara City Fire officials say the man got caught in a rip tide near a buoy after attempting to rescue a young girl. Nearby surfers attempted to help the man and eventually pulled him back to shore.

The man has not been identified at this time. His family was on scene. No further details were immediately known.
