Person killed in deadly Carpinteria cliff fall identified

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office identified the person killed in a deadly cliff fall in Carpinteria Monday morning as 18-year-old Filiberto Scott Hernandez, a resident of Carpinteria.
The Sheriff’s Office says the 18-year-old was reported missing by his mother over the weekend. It wasn’t until a relative and a friend who had been searching for him, that Hernandez was found “unresponsive and not breathing at the bottom of the bluffs, east of the seal reserve and rookery,” says a press statement by the Sheriff’s Office.
Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
The Coroner’s Officer is working to determine an official cause of manner of death. A final determination is pending toxicology and lab results.

What started out as a cliff rescue out at the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve has become a body recovery for emergency crews.
The incident was reported just after 10 a.m. Monday. The cliff fall victim is described as a teenager. Family members are present on scene.
It appears the victim fell approximately 50-60 feet down to the beach. The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department are on scene.
Emergency crews had to battle high tide in their efforts to bring the body back up to the cliff. No further details were immediately available.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
