Chuck’s of Hawaii celebrates 50 years in Santa Barbara
Chuck’s of Hawaii is celebrating 50 years in the same Santa Barbara location with the same owner, Larry Stone.
The restaurant opened in 1967 after Stone had worked at Chuck’s in Hawaii following college, and took up a chance to expand the restaurant concept to California. He chose Santa Barbara but not downtown. Instead he was able to find space in a new building owned by the Sumida family.
The restaurant remains in the same location and has classic tiki torches out front. Inside, Chuck’s has honored steak dinners, voted as “The Best of” in the Santa Barbara Independent for many years.
This week, many past employees came back to celebrate at special events to recall their years at Chuck’s and for many, their careers after working at the restaurant.
Customers have been enjoying “rollback prices” on steak, chicken and fish dinners, along with specialty drinks at the bar.
In Santa Barbara, Chuck’s Waterfront Grill is also open at the harbor, operated by Steve Hyslop.
Over the years, Stone has been involved in many restaurant ventures including The Beachside Bar and Cafe in Goleta and several in Idaho where he lives part of the year.
