Final preparations for Kids Helping Kids benefit concert underway

It’s getting down to the wire for San Marcos High School seniors who run the non-profit, Kids Helping Kids (KHK).

They are a little over a week away from putting on their annual benefit concert at the Granada Theater.

The headliner is Grammy Award nominee Gavin DeGraw.

From booking DeGraw, to building the set and soliciting auction items, it all rests on their shoulders.

KHK is a registered 501.3c, operated as part of an AP Economics Class at the high school.

Money raised by the non-profit helps local children, and youth living in other parts of the world.

In December, a small group of students, along with chaperones, organized a private trip to Mumbai, India to learn more about a group there helping young kids escape sex trafficking.

“We went there to make a connection, try to find out more about Bombay Teen Challenge, which takes girls and teens out of the red light district and gives them an education,” said student Andrew Davis.

A week later, another group of students went to Cuba.

“We did a lot of service. We would paint, a lot of painting, painted a school a few walls, and spent time with kids,” said student Matthew Hempy.

Some of the students are using the video to make a documentary.
