Newly renovated skate park in Santa Maria reopens
SANTA MARIA, Calif.- New features to the skate park include new ramps, rails and new lighting was also included so kids could skate later at night.
The city revamped its design by asking local skateboarders for suggestions. A new security fence was also included for safety.
“The ramps I believe were purchased in 2006. So they were getting a little old, a little worn out. So they needed some updating and some refreshing. And then we had some extra money to buy new ramps," said Jason Davie, The City of Santa Maria Recreation Supervisor.
The city says the renovated skate park now offers a variety of new features.
“We bought new ramps, new rails, new kick ramps and a hub ramps. So lots of new features added to the park as well as we now have new lighting. So kids can skate later at night and a new security fence as well," said Jason Davie.
Skaters say they are happy with the new design and say it brings more people to the park.
“Usually before it would always be empty. But now there's kids here. We don't have to look at an empty space anymore. It's active now it's lively," said Christian Navarro.
Both the city and skaters believe the new and improved skate park will attract more skaters.
“I'm like in the middle of the new generation and the older generation I was the little kid when the old kids were like up and coming and stuff. But yeah there's a lot more new kids here. Everyone's super friendly and stuff," said Christian Navarro.
Right now the skate park is open until 10pm but that will soon change. After the holidays the park will close at 8pm.
