Carpinteria man walks to promote peace
Larry Nimmer is celebrating 2017 with an annual walk and dance from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara.
The 65-year-old is a filmmaker from Carpinteria.
Nimmer walks the 10 mile stretch each year after the New Year. It’s his resolution to promote peace and be healthy.
“My personal mission statement is to do anything I can to bring people together, to bring peace,” said Larry Nimmer.
Each walk has a theme. He started his first walk by just walking. In recent years, Nimmer films himself dancing the entire route.
“It stirs my curiosity. It’s a unique outfit to run in or traverse the county in,” said Robert Gilcrest, a jogger who passed by Nimmer.
This year, Nimmer danced to Hamilton, a Broadway original musical. He listened to the musical soundtrack on his ear-buds as he danced in public. He wore a bright blue Hamilton-themed costume which turned many heads.
Hamilton is about Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant and one of America’s founding fathers. Hamilton overcame obstacles and contributed to the ideals of a nation.
“People from all walks of life can relate to it, how it’s contemporary today. It just promotes goodness and creativity,” said Nimmer.
Another way he is promoting peace is by creating a game and social media platform called Purple Fish. Nimmer hopes people from opposing political beliefs can connect and find common ground by playing the game. It will be officially launched January 20.
