Motorcyclist killed in crash near Summerland

A 53-year-old Santa Barbara man is dead after crashing his Harley Davidson motorcycle into a vehicle on state Route 192 near Summerland Sunday afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol’s traffic collision report says that just before 4:30 p.m., 83-year-old Barbara Ariel Ford of Carpinteria was traveling eastbound on Foothill Road in a Mercedes SUV when she saw the black Harley driving towards her from the opposite direction.

The CHP says the motorcyclist continued driving straight despite a curve on the roadway, and drove across the painted double yellow lines.

The collision report continues saying that 83-year-old Ford steered to the right but was not able to avoid the crash with the motorcycle.

The motorcycle rider was ejected onto the roadway where he was run over. A friend riding with the motorcyclist called 911 to report the crash, but by the time paramedics arrived on scene it was too late.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will not be released pending notification of next-of-kin.

Ford did not suffer any injuries in the crash.

Foothill Road was blocked in both directions near the scene of the crash for about two hours while an investigation was conducted.

CHP says neither drugs or alcohol are believed to be factors in this crash. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
