Cal Poly student free speech wall vandalized

Cal Poly students are getting an up close and personal lesson in free speech and tolerance.

The student free speech wall set up late last week in the center of campus by Cal Poly Republicans as part of an annual tradition was vandalized and knocked down.

The vandalized political wall was left in its place for all students to see.

“Its not a very good thing when we can’t handle people with different opinions”, one student said while looking at the vandalism, “I understand a lot of the stuff on here was bad, was hateful, but that does not give you the right to spray paint, to basically tear down something that had so much thought behind it.”

The student free speech wall has seen controversy in recent years with other hate speech.

“I was hoping everyone learned their lesson not to put like bad comments on here but, I don’t know, this happens I guess”, another Cal Poly student said, “it’s a rather big community and there’s always a few that kind of mess up a little bit.”

University Police are investigating the apparent vandalism.

“The other day, it was yesterday, I was running and there was a Nazi symbol like a Swastika, I don’t know if they removed it but it still might be under there”, another student said, “it’s just really sad that someone did that in our community and are voicing so much hatred when we’re a school that doesn’t, I believe, doesn’t show that, you know.”

University administration has condemned the vandalism and hate speech on the student free speech wall saying it does not, in any way, reflect the true values of Cal Poly.
