Savage, Kavaloski named Round Table athletes of the week

Local student-athletes took a short break from school on Monday afternoon to meet in Orcutt at the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table.

On hand at Giavanni’s Pizza were representatives from football, boys water polo and girls tennis.

Earning the female athlete of the week award was Mary Kavaloski of Santa Ynez tennis, who was not in attendance. The senior claimed her third career Los Padres League Tournament singles championship last week with a two-set victory over Mili Proft of Templeton.

Playing at the Santa Maria Country Club last Saturday, Kavaloski entered the tournament as the second seed. A 6-2, 6-3 victory in the title match over top-seeded Proft gave Kavaloski her second straight league championship. She also won the Los Padres League title as a freshman.

With the victory, Kavaloski earned an automatic spot in the upcoming CIF-Southern Section Individual Tournament.

The male athlete of the week award was given to Shemar Savage of Lompoc football. Last Friday at St. Joseph in a match-up featuring two teams tied for first-place, the junior ran the opening kickoff back 76-yards for a touchdown.

Savage also recorded seven solo tackles to help lead the Braves to a 27-3 victory over the Knights. For Lompoc (9-0, 3-0), it marked the team’s 7th straight game without allowing a touchdown. It was also the Braves’ 31st consecutive Los Padres League victory dating back to Oct. 29, 2010.

With the victory, Lompoc captured at least a share of the league title. Lompoc has won the Los Padres League every year since 2010.

For the season, Savage has scored nine touchdowns, with the eight other scores coming as receptions. The nine touchdowns are second-most on the team, trailing only Toa Taua, who has scored 21 times.

Lompoc will conclude the regular season this Friday when it hosts arch-rival Cabrillo at Huyck Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
