Garcia, Fouratt Named Round Table athletes of the week

Top athletes from the recently completed week were honored Monday at the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table.

Held at Giavanni’s Pizza in Orcutt, the Round Table included student-athletes from football, cross country and golf.

Sarah Fouratt of Righetti golf was named the female athlete of the week. The junior earned medalist honors at the final Pac-8 League of the season. Playing at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande last Wednesday, Fouratt fired a 77 to earn her third straight league championship.

Fouratt, who also earned league MVP honors, was not in attendance at the luncheon. She was busy competing in the CIF Southern Section Northern Regional, which was held Monday at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard. Fouratt was one of six Pac-8 golfers to qualify for the event.

The male athlete of the week was awarded to Isiah Garcia of Santa Maria football. The junior running back rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns, plus caught a touchdown pass to help lead the Saints to a 35-14 victory over Morro Bay last Friday.

With the win, the Saints improved to 2-1 in the Los Padres League and 5-4 overall. The five wins is the most for the program in a season since 2001, which is also the last year the team qualified for the CIF playoffs. The victory kept Santa Maria in solid playoff position, and also maintained the possibility the team could also earn a share of the league title.

“Santa Maria is back,” said Garcia. “I knew how important this game was. It was pretty much like a playoff game for us.”

For the season, Garcia has rushed for 756 yards and seven touchdowns. Both totals lead the Saints. He has also caught one touchdown.

“It just feels so great to know we’re winning games,” said Garcia. “A lot of alumni are coming up to us and saying good job. We never got that last year. It makes us proud that people know who we are, and what we’re doing, and how hard we are working.”

Santa Maria has a bye this week and will wrap up the regular seasons with a home game versus first-place Nipomo. Should the Titans beat Morro Bay this week, it will set up a league championship game with the Saints on Friday, Nov. 4.
