Power Plant Hearing Could Heat Up In Oxnard

The Environmental Defense Center release the following letter on Friday:

“Today marks an important victory in the effort to stop yet another polluting fossil fuel power plant from moving forward along the coast of Oxnard. After months of effort, the Environmental Defense Center, along with our clients the Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter and Environmental Coalition of Ventura County applaud the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Order demanding a pause in the process to consider the proposed Puente Power Plant.

After hours of expert testimony and the overwhelming number of submitted comments demonstrating that the project’s impacts to natural resources were grossly underestimated and unmitigated, the CEC required the applicant to provide additional evidence of the project’s impacts to rare and sensitive wildlife and habitats and its risks posed from sea level rise and coastal erosion. The Order also demanded additional information examining alternative sites and the removal of the existing Mandalay towers. In all, the CEC has taken an important step toward protecting Oxnard’s besieged coastline.”

The California Energy Commission has set aside two days to hear public comments about a proposed power plant in Oxnard .

The NRG company wants to build another power plant on Mandalay Beach off Harbor Boulevard near the Oxnard Shores community and a popular surf spot.

Opponents plan to rally outside the workshop at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Thursday.

They want commissioners to know Oxnard already has three beachside power plants.

The power company does not believe there will be significant impact to the community.

Public comments on the so-called Puente Project start at 10 a.m. Thursday and may continue on Friday.
