State Lands Commission Approves Extending Leases for Diablo Canyon Power Plant
LATEST UPDATE
The California State Lands Commission has approved extending the leases for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant to remain in operation until their planned shut down in 2025.
The Lands Commission made the decision Tuesday afternoon.
On June 21, PG&E announced they would not seek relicensing for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant past their federal licensing period. However, in order for PG&E to start the process of decommissioning the plant and advancing their Joint Proposal, the company needed the State Lands Commission to extend its two leases for the power plant through the end of its current federal licensing period.
“We thank the commissioners for their leadership and their support, without which this historic proposal could not move forward. While there is much more work to do, today’s vote was a critical first step,” said PG&E Electric President Geisha Williams, who spoke on behalf of the company at the commission today.
With Tuesday’s leases extension, PG&E now enters on a 30-day public comment period before presenting their Joint Proposal on decommissioning to the California Public Utilities Commission.
