Ojai Earthquakes Widely Felt in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties

Two moderate and several small earthquakes have been felt mainly in the Ojai area, but also through Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

No damage or injuries have been reported.

One quake was felt Friday night at 11:27 p.m. with a 3.3 magnitude. Another, which was larger at 12:42 a.m. Saturday was 4.2 magnitude. ( One other reports have the larger quake at 3.8 magnitude.) Information on the specifics of this quake show it close to the surface.

Other shallow quakes have been reported in the area, and data shows they are under magnitude 2.0.

NewsChannel 3 has received reports of the quakes from Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Ojai, and Oxnard.

Researchers in the area for years have been aware of a fault line from the Ojai Valley through the hills along Highway 150 out to the Pacific Ocean capable of a strong and damaging quake. Several maps and seismic hazard studies dating back more than a decade show a high risk earthquake zone in Fillmore and Piru along with the unpopulated areas of the Topa Topa mountains.
