Camarillo Too Powerful for Bishop Diego in CIF Northern Division Semifinal
Even with a 15-year old making his first varsity start at quarterback, Camarillo was too strong for Bishop Diego as the Scorpions thumped the Cardinals 54-28 in a CIF Northern Division semifinal.
Sophomore Jake Moss, starting in place of suspended star Jake Constantine, threw for 273 yards with three touchdowns as the Scorpions advance to the championship game against Thousand Oaks.
Moss relied heavily on star receiver Frankie Tostado and running back Isaiah Otis as they combined for five touchdowns.
Camarillo led 21-7 early in the second quarter after Tostado took a middle screen pass and ran through and past most of the Cardinals defense for an electrifying 70 yard touchdown.
But Bishop Diego used big plays to stay in the game for awhile. Sophomore John Harris came down with a juggling catch on a bomb from Spencer Stovesand and the 74-yard touchdown reception cut the lead to 21-14. It was Harris’ second td of the game.
But turnovers hurt Bishop Diego in this game. After they fumbled a punt late in the half, Otis scored with 35 seconds left and Camarillo led 28-14 at the break.
Early in the second half, Brett Herron’s strip sack of Stovesand led to a scramble for the ball and Collin Kirksey fell on it in the endzone to put Camarillo up 35-14.
Stovesand scored from three yards out to cut the deficit to 35-21 but Camarillo quickly put the game out of reach. Moss, who threw for over 270 yards, hit Elijah Alexander for a 28 yard td and then Tostado went to work again.
He intercepted a pass and then scored on a 27-yard screen pass to make it 48-21 Scorpions late in the third quarter. Tostado finished with 175 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Otis, who ran for over 150 yards, scored his third rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring for Camarillo.
The Scorpions will host Thousand Oaks for the section championship on Friday, December 4 and yes Jake Constantine will be back for the title game. On October 30 Camarillo outlasted Thousand Oaks 49-45.
Camarillo is 13-0 and currently ranked No. 11 in the state.
Bishop Diego, with just an enrollment of 242 students, finishes 12-1.
