Inside a California Highway Patrol Boot Camp
The California Highway Patrol was formed in 1929 to provide service to motorists as well as fair and unified enforcement of traffic safety laws. Today, it’s the fifth largest police agency.
During the 1990s, the CHP mission expanded. In 1995, the California State Police was merged into the CHP. Their responsibilities include protecting state facilities, employees, dignitaries and equipment.
The CHP’s primary jurisdiction is the unincorporated roadways and all freeway systems; however, it can, and does, enforce laws statewide.
In July 2002, the CHP became the statewide coordinator for the state’s AMBER Alert program. Since its inception there have been more than 200 AMBER Alerts activated, and 300 children safely located.
The CHP employs more than 11,000 personnel.
Reporter Nataly Tavidian attended the CHP Media Boot Camp. This is where members of the media got a snippet of the 27 week cadet training program condensed into one day. The training included physical raining, weapons training, DUI training, enforcement tactics, emergency vehicle operations course, accident investigation and mental illness response.
Be sure to check back for more exclusive web content as well as behind-the-scene videos, and tune in for Nataly’s special report on Tuesday, November 3 only on KCOY 12.
