Guadalupe Searching for Substitute Teachers

Nearly every public school district on the Central Coast is dealing with a lack of qualified, substitute teachers.

Now the recruiting efforts are underway.

The Guadalupe Union School District held a “super subs for super subs” night with help from Subway to enlist potential substitute teachers to fill chronic and growing shortages.

“Being a guest teacher is not a job for everybody, you’re got to be special person to come in and be able to engage students”, says GUSD Superintendent Ed Cora, “to give them that positive, enlightening experience that students need to stay busy and to make it an educational experience.”

Dozens of people responded to the “super subs for super subs” call for help and the possibility of being paid between $140 and $170 dollars a day for filling in in the classroom.

“I always wanted to work with kids, I like working with kids”, said one local businessman who attended the meeting, “I think i want to give something back to my community that’s given me so much.”

“Being a substitute teacher is a good alternative job, pay the bills, and I have no problem working with kids, I’ve done private tutoring before”, added another man who attened the meeting at the Mary Buren Elementary School Library.

Not everyone will make the grade and make the list of available substitute teachers.

That’s why GUSD and nearly every other public school district on the Central Coast is urging retired teachers to fill the void.

“I think retired teachers out there that are feeling that itch to maybe get back in the classroom, I think it’s a great opportunity to come back”, Ed Cora said, “they have the skills, they know it, they’ve done it for years.”

In order to qualify to become a substitute teacher in California public schools you must have a Bachelors degree and have passed the C-BEST exam.
