Humane Society’s Longest Resident Finally Finds a Home
UPDATE
Great news! Dahlia, the longest resident at the Santa Barbara Humane Society shelter, was adopted on Wednesday by an Orange County man.
The man saw the pitbull on the news, drove up to Santa Barbara, spend some time with Dahlia, and took her home.
The Humane Society could not be more happy. In a statement they said, “We are over the moon! For all of you that asked about how Dahlia is doing…she has found her forever home!! Thank you to everyone that shared her story and reached out to us!”

ORIGINAL STORY
2,534 days in dog years translates to nearly 49 years, but in reality, it’s nearly seven years — the length of time one dog has spent at the Santa Barbara Humane Society shelter.
“She is a great little dog,” said Erica Jackson, Canine Adoption Counselor for the humane society. “Just kind of gets by-passed over and over again.”
Staffers at the local shelter hope someone in our community will have a forever home for Dahlia, a sweet and active 7-year-old pitbull who loves swimming in the kiddie pool.
“She won’t hesitate to jump on the bench next to you and roll over for belly rubs and give you lots of kisses,” said Jackson, who described Dahlia as “happy-go-lucky.”
The black and white pitbull came to the shelter when she just six months old, her owner simply couldn’t keep her.
Now, thanks to social media, the Humane Society’s longest resident is becoming quite the celebrity pooch with nearly 49,000 views on Facebook and more than 1,000 shares. Calls are coming in from all over the country.
“We’re hoping that she can kind of find a home that’s a little close to us so that we can do home visits with her … adjust her slowly to living at a house,” said Jackson. “Even though she’s technically an older dog, Dahlia has a lot of energy. She’d still love to go hiking and long walks.”
Think of her as the only child: No cats, no other dogs, hoping for an owner willing to give her loads of love and oodles of attention.
