Star Trek’s “Spock” Chooses Goleta-Based Direct Relief For Charity Initiative
The cast of “Star Trek Beyond” is joining forces to offer a lucky fan and a friend a small part in the next film.
On Tuesday, Paramount Pictures announced ‘Star Trek: To Boldly Go’, a new philanthropic initiative benefiting charities chosen by the all star cast.
The actors appeared in a video announcing details about the competition.
The entry fee is $10.
The winner will appear in “Star Trek Beyond.”
Five other winners will get to visit the film set, meet the cast and get a sneak peek at scenes from the new film.
Nine actors chose nine charities to receive the proceeds from the competition.
Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock, chose Goleta-based Direct Relief which provides medical resources for people affected by poverty or emergency situations.
Direct Relief said it was an honor to be chosen by Quinto.
“I grew up with Star Trek, so to be somehow involved with the Starship Enterprise and Spock is pretty cool,” said CEO Thomas Tighe.
Direct Relief said Quinto has been working with them for several months raising awareness for the organization’s work during the Ebola crisis in West Africa and the aftermath of the earthquakes in Nepal.
“If you are a star or a regular person, you want the money you provide to a charitable organization to do what they say it’s going to do and Direct Relief has a history of that,” said Tighe.
“Star Trek Beyond” is expected to be released in theaters next summer.
